My Light Control class just finished up at PCNW. For my final project I decided to try something a little different – mirrors. I found a smallish piece of mirror in my workroom, stopped at the grocery store for a bag of fruit, and went into the studio not really sure what I was goingContinue reading “reflections”

snow, snow, and more snow
Just as spring really seemed to be settling in here in Skagit County, we had a rude interruption in the form of 18″ of fresh snow. We’ve lived here for 14 years, and have never seen a snowfall like this (we usually consider it a big snow year if we get 6″ for the wholeContinue reading “snow, snow, and more snow”
spring is creeping in
It may be cold, windy and wet, but spring is definitely approaching. Last week I caved and bought some gorgeous primroses for the front porch. Now if the wind will just settle down so they won’t blow away.
point and shoot
The problem with flower photography at this time of year is that most of the blooms are down at ground level. Yesterday I noticed that we had some snowdrops open under the fir tree, and I wanted to try to get some closeups, so I kneeled down and tried to peer through the viewfinder withContinue reading “point and shoot”
strings of light
This shot was a byproduct of a studio shoot I was doing for my Light Control class. I set my husband’s old fiddle up and shot it first with a strobe in a reflector dish, then switched it out for a softbox, to see the different effects of each type of light. After I gotContinue reading “strings of light”
mood lighting
I’m taking another class at Photographic Center Northwest this quarter. This one is called Light Control, and is supposed to teach us how to manage lighting, whether it’s natural, artificial, or a mix of both. There’s a huge prejudice in the food blogging world against using artificial light for food photography, but it seems toContinue reading “mood lighting”
up close
Blooming amaryllis + macro lens + cabin fever = lots of flower closeups. I love how amaryllis petals look wet when you get right up into them.
light
Two seashells and a window full of winter sunlight.
husk
On another of my random wanderings through the garden I happened across what I think is a desiccated tomatillo husk, bleached white but still intact. I took some shots of it in situ, then laid it on the arm of the old distressed Adirondack chair in the back yard and tried to make a pictureContinue reading “husk”
the winter garden
I’ve gone out into the garden a few times this week to take photos. Not because there’s anything going on out there – the cold spell we had a few weeks ago took care of most of the remaining flowers and leaves – but as a creative exercise to see if I can find anythingContinue reading “the winter garden”
