I just can’t resist sunlight through fog in the woods. And we have a lot of it this time of year.

Tumwater in October
On our last drive over Stevens Pass, the maples were mostly over and the aspens had dropped a lot of leaves, but the cottonwoods were bright yellow and there was still plenty of color. Tumwater Canyon was swarming with photographers, for obvious reasons.
September evening
We were driving through the Kittitas Valley right at sunset last weekend. As usual, I was having fun shooting the wind machines on the bare hills outside of Ellensburg, but then had my breath taken away by the view as we crested the hill above Bettas Road. Amazing.
drive-by shooting
When we road trip down to California, I tend to spend a lot of time shooting photos through the car windows – not the best way to shoot, but it’s surprising how well some of the images turn out. One of these years maybe we’ll allow enough time to actually get out of the carContinue reading “drive-by shooting”
tulip season
This past week has been the height of the tulip bloom here in Skagit. I’d been driving back and forth to the art show at Rexville, keeping an eye on the blooms, and finally one morning I took myself out to the fields at sunrise and watched the morning fog roll over the tulips andContinue reading “tulip season”
daffs and swans
Fields of daffodils, snow on the hills, swans on the wing. This is a pretty place.
happy spring!
Happy first day of spring! Admittedly, it’s not looking like spring yet up in the mountains – we just crossed the pass this weekend and it was still very wintry. But at home in my garden, things are beginning to happen. Hellebores, chionodoxa, hyacinth, early daffodils and muscari are all in bloom, the pussywillow catkinsContinue reading “happy spring!”
low tide
As often happens in February in Skagit, the sun has been making brief appearances, only to vanish again behind gray wet clouds. We took advantage of a sunbreak to walk out at Padilla Bay again. The tide was going out, and No Name Slough wound gleaming through the tideflats while mist rolled in from theContinue reading “low tide”
winter walks
The last couple of weeks have gone through quite a range of weather. One morning the dog and I climbed up Little Mountain, hearing wild geese call through the dense mist, emerging at the very top into blue sky with snowy mountains poking up out of the fog. Another day we left the gray riverContinue reading “winter walks”
cold and clear
We’ve had some cold, bright days here over the last couple of weeks. The dog and I drove out towards the foothills one morning and found a pretty side road with views of Mount Baker, farms and frosty fields. I don’t feel like I quite got the shot I was hoping for but it wasContinue reading “cold and clear”
